Context dependency and systematicity in connectionism

چکیده
I argue that connectionist models are well prepared to deal with the problem of context dependency. I understand the problem of context dependency in the case of language processing and in relation to the problem of systematicity as follows: if the meaning of a word in a sentence is context dependent, then the systematicity of our cognitive capacities could not be explained, since the same word in a new sentence (though being the same) would not have the same meaning as in the initial sentence, and then, concerning systematicity, our ability to produce or understand a new sentence would not depend on our ability to produce or understand the initial sentence. A correctly trained network should be able to distinguish them as different meanings precisely because the meaning is always differently determined in the network. I will discuss to which extent systematicity would be a problem for connectionism.

The question whether connectionism offers a new way of looking at the cognitive architecture, or if its main contribution is as an implementational account of the classical (symbol) view, has been extensively debated for the last decade. Of special interest in this debate has been to achieve tasks which easily can be explained within the symbolic framework, i.e., tasks which seemingly require t...
متن کاملThe Proper Treatment of Semantic Systematicity
Connectionist-minded philosophers, including Clark and van Gelder, have espoused the merits of viewing hiddenlayer, context-sensitive representations as possessing semantic content, where this content is partially revealed via the representations' position in vector space. In recent work, Bodén and Niklasson have incorporated a variant of this view within their conception of semantic systematic...
متن کاملOn the Systematicity of Language and Thought
The last twenty years or so have seen a lot of discussion about systematicity-roughly the idea that if a person's repertoire contains the sentence/thought thatJohn loves Mary, then her repertoire also contains the sentence/thought that Mary loves John.' Much of the discussion of systematicity has focused on the technical question of whether and how connectionists can explain the systematicity o...
متن کاملConnectionism and Systematicity
Linguists have known that adults (and perhaps even children) are systematic to a signi cant degree over the language domain. However, Connectionist models based on feedforward and recurrent architectures have failed to give a clear demonstration of strong systematicity. In this paper it is shown that these models, as they are used in the literature, cannot in fact demonstrate strong systematici...
متن کاملConnectionism and the Problem of Systematicity
Systematicity is a pervasive property of cognitive behaviour (e.g., language and reasoning) whereby the ability to represent (systematicity of representation) and infer from (systematicity of inference) some instances of a structured object extends to other instances conforming to the same structure (Fodor & Pylyshyn, 1988; Fodor & McLaughlin, 1990). The problem of systematicity for a Connectio...
